NIJ 0106.01 / NIJ 0108.01 (USA)
The standards of the U.S. National Institute of Justice (NIJ) are the most widely used worldwide. They define the following protection levels:
IIA, II, IIIA – designed to protect against handgun rounds, including 9x19 mm FMJ, .357 SIG, and .44 Magnum.
STANAG 2920 (NATO)
Used to evaluate protection against fragments. The V50 value represents the velocity at which 50% of fragments penetrate the helmet. For modern models, this value is typically 600–700 m/s, equivalent to fragments from mines and artillery shells.
VPAM (Europe)
The VPAM standard is applied in Europe for testing helmets and ballistic vests.
VPAM 3–4 – protection against most handgun calibers.
VPAM 6, 7, 8 – higher levels, including resistance to rifle and specialized ammunition.
This standard also takes into account shooting distance and other real combat scenarios.
DSTU (Ukraine)
Ukrainian standards are harmonized with NIJ and VPAM.
Class 1–2 – protection against handgun rounds such as 9x18 mm and 9x19 mm.
